Nutritional Counseling

Nutritional counseling is an ongoing process in which a health professional works with the client to assess his or her usual dietary intake and identify areas where change is needed or desired.

The goal of nutritional counseling or medical nutrition therapy is to assess medical history, food allergies, preferences, and current health status to prescribe changes to the diet and coupled with behavior change counseling for improved health and optimal health status.

Nutrition Education is any combination of educational strategies, accompanied by environmental supports, designed to facilitate voluntary adoption of food choices and other food- and nutrition-related behaviors conducive to health and well-being.

Nutritional counseling helps people to set achievable health goals and teaches various ways of achieving and maintaining those goals now and throughout their lifetime. Nutrition is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Without proper nutrition, one does not have enough energy to make it through the day.

Do nutrition strategies help with weight loss? During your medical nutrition evaluation and discussions, your physician will look closely at your eating habits and assist you in determining how many calories to eat per day to lose weight steadily and safely. He or she can help you plan a healthy, nutritious diet and help you make positive lifestyle changes that last.

Today there are numerous resources or websites that discuss various aspects of diet, nutrition, and fitness – and frankly these can be confusing.
